Panicum virgatum ‘Hot Rod’ revs up into the red zone

Panicum virgatum ‘Hot Rod’ revs up into the red zone earlier than other switch grasses. This Emerald Coast Growers exclusive showcases firmly upright blades that emerge blue/green, then redden rapidly until the whole plant is rich, deep maroon – far before most switch grasses.

Delicate, graceful panicles in a rich red provide a lovely contrast to the foliage’s sharp lines. Tan flower heads emerge from mid-summer to mid-fall. It has a great clumping habit combined with an attractive vertical form.

A North American native, ‘Hot Rod’ offers excellent salt tolerance and durability in the landscape, plus great drought tolerance as well. Great in masses, as a stand-alone or in gardens and containers. ‘Hot Rod’ prefers full sun, spreads to 24 inches and reaches approximately 36 to 40 inches tall. It is hardy in Zones 4 to 10.
